OUR EYE CARE TEAM PROVIDES

Comprehensive Emergency Eye Care Services

Eye emergencies can be both concerning and uncomfortable. At Southern Eyecare Associates, we provide prompt and compassionate emergency eye care to patients in Norfolk and the surrounding areas.

A sudden injury doesn't just bring pain; it can lead to significant health complications. Some parts of the body are more prone to injury, resulting in potential long-term damage.

While eyes are often referred to as the window to the soul, they are also among the most delicate and crucial areas of the body. Any injury to the eyes can have adverse effects on your vision and should be promptly examined for assessment.

Common Eye Injuries at Southern Eyecare Associates, Norfolk

Eye injuries are prevalent in various settings, including schools, offices, homes, and during travel. Sports activities, a common source of eye injuries, and on-site job visits, especially in the construction industry, frequently lead to eye emergencies.

We are equipped to address a range of eye emergencies, such as:

  • Chemical exposure
  • Concussion
  • "Floaters" in the vision
  • Dislodged contact lenses
  • Eye infections
  • Eye trauma
  • Flashes of light in the vision
  • Foreign materials stuck in the eyes
  • Lost or broken contact lenses or eyeglasses
  • Red or painful eyes
  • Scratched eyes
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Uncomfortable, itchy, or irritated eyes

Additionally, for effective relief, scleral lenses are available. These custom-designed rigid contact lenses with a large diameter cover the entire sclera (the white part of the eye) without touching the cornea. Scleral lenses include a small reservoir of water, ensuring continuous moisture for dry eyes.

Understanding Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

Pink eye, clinically known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition characterized by the inflammation of the conjunctiva — the thin, clear layer that covers the white of your eye (sclera). This inflammation can cause the eye to appear red or pink, hence the name.

There are four primary types of pink eye, each with its own causes and symptoms:

  • Viral Conjunctivitis: Highly contagious, caused by a virus, and leads to watery, itchy, and red eyes.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Contagious, caused by bacteria, and results in a burning sensation, gritty feeling, and yellowish, sticky discharge. It requires antibiotic treatment.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: Not contagious, triggered by allergens like pollen or pet dander, causing itchy, watery, or burning eyes and often accompanied by nasal symptoms.

Chemical Conjunctivitis: Non-contagious, results from exposure to irritant chemicals, leading to pain, temporary vision impairment, redness, and swelling. It is treated by rinsing the eye and using lubricating eye drops.

Preventing Pink Eye

Reduce your risk of pink eye with these simple precautions:

  • Thoroughly wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid sharing items like makeup, hand towels, washcloths, or eyeglasses.
  • Refrain from touching or rubbing your eyes.
  • Wear goggles while swimming to protect your eyes from microbes and irritants.
  • Follow your contact lens care instructions diligently.
  • Regularly sanitize household surfaces and handheld devices.
